2009 La Fussière, Jean-François Bachelet, Bourgogne, France, Maranges 1er Cru
Until recently, the Bachelet brothers worked together to cultivate the vineyards of 100 hectares. As so often in families wineries, when the children are grown up, Francois Bachelet left the family estate and recovered 33 hectares of vines (see Bachelet-Monnot). Vincent and Jean-François are now the sole owners of the domain D. Bachelet These brothers are traditionalists, they do most of the work in the vineyards themselves.
Minimum quantities of pesticides and organic fertilizers are used. Many grapes are green harvested to reduce the volume. Harvesting is done by hand, which avoids unripe or damaged grapes to enter in the vinification of return and avoid in this way premature oxidation.
The vineyard started with only 8 hectares. Father Bernard took over in 1947. During the 1950s he collected several vineyards and in 1980, he gave the vines to the sons. At that time it was a total of 43 hectares. The sons developed the area up to 100 hectares. After the departure of François it was again reduced to 67 hectares.
This wine comes from a small vineyard with vines planted between 1940 and 1975. The wine is made in a mixture of new and older barrels with roughly a 12 month élevage, then racked to cement vats where it rests for roughly six more months.
