2006 Morgenster, Cape of Good Hope, South-Africa, Stellenbosch
The Morgenster Estate is situated in Somerset West, in the center of the western part of the Cape. Beside wines in Bordeaux style they also produce a well-praised Extra Virgin Olive Oil. In the beginning the domain was part of the domain Vergelegen, the former propriety of Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. After his return to Holland in 1708, they divided the vineyard into 4 parts. One part was obtained by Jacques Malan, a Huegenote who fled from France. Jacques Malan gave his domain the name Morgenster.
Three centuries later, in 1992, Giulio Bertrand, from Piemonte and lover of South-Africa, buys the domain to profit from his retirement. The mountains surrounding Morgenster remind him of his fatherland and he decides to plant vines and olive trees.
Oenologue and director of Cheval Blanc and Yquem, Pierre Lurton joins him together with the African winemaker Marius Lategan in 1999. In 2004 Gerrie Wagener, an experienced winemaker and former director of Vergelegen and Boschendal, joins this team .
The wine matures for 16 months on French barrels.
