1999 Domaine Jo Pithon, Val de Loire, France, Coteaux du Layon Chaume
Jo Pithon owns a vineyard of around 12 hectares situated in the valley of the Loire,25 km south of Angers. With the Chenin grape they can produce dry wines as well as semi-sweet wines and liquor wines on different soils and appellations.
The Chenin grape is very interesting as on its own, it does not have much aromas but it translates in a wonderful way the soil where it has been produced. Biologic culture, working the soil, short cut, manual partial elimination of leaves for good ventilation of the grapes, collecting in several selections as well for the dry as sweet wines. The wines mature during 12 to 24 months on barrels.
The wines of the Coteaux de Layon Chaume are sweet wines, produced for 100 % with the Chenin grape that is picked when it is very ripe in different selections during several days. These wines represent aromas of honey, pear and quince. The Coteaux de Layon have an excellent potential to mature (over 20 years for the best ones).
