2011 Morrellino di Scansano, Fattoria Le Pupille, Tuscany, Italy, DOCG Morellino di Scansano
For over twenty years Elisabetta Geppetti has been expressing her passion for wine at the Fattoria Le Pupille. With the help of her husband, Stefano Rizzi, and the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, Le Pupille became one of the most beautiful stars in the Italian wine firmament. Today, the wine is made by the French winemaker Christian Le Sommer, oenologist at Château Lafite and Château Latour. A new cellar was built at the edge of field, were different wines emerge. The local hero is the grape, Commerce Morellino di Scansano, which is actually a synonym for the local variety of the Sangiovese and it is assembled with some Alicante and Malvasia Nera.
The vineyards are situated on Pareta on 30 hectares in total, with a direction facing south and southwest, 250m above sea level. The vineyards were planted in 1970 and 2002.
Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG): Similar to the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) but more stringent. Allowed yields are generally lower, and DOCG wines must pass an evaluation of a tasting committee before they can be bottled. The establishment of DOCG wines has resulted in an overall improvement in the quality of Italian wines.
