Bordeaux wineyards : the biggest AOC in France
The wineregion of Bordeaux consists of planted wineyards specifically in the Gironde department, a region located in South-West France along the Atlantic Ocean embraced by the Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne rivers.
The Bordeaux wineyards are known as the oldest and biggest AOC’s of France. Bordeaux spreads over more than 117000 ha and 57 appellations that provide an annual production of 5-6.000.000 hectoliters. Besides, some of the wines of this region are considered as the best of the world. The five subregions which depend on the extensive wineyards include the Medoc, the Graves, the Entre-deux-Mers, the Right bank and Sautneres where the best wines are produced.
The Bordeaux-region of Bordeaux benefits from the presence of clay-limestone, which is one of the most favorable for the cultivation of quality vines and grapes. Around the Graves-region sand and gravel banks can be found which are extremely appropriated for the viticulture. The high quality of the wines from this French wine region is well-known around the world. The Bordeaux-region of Bordeaux is to date the « show window » of French wine. The strong personality of Bordeaux wine mainly stems from the character and diversity of their terroir and not to forget the authentic knowlegde of the winegrowers. The most important grape varieties of the region are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for the red wine and Sauvignon, Muscadelle and Semillon for the white wines.
