Campo de Borja DOThe Campo de Borja DO is located in the North of Spain, in the West of the province of Zaragoza and spreads over 7500 ha and 16 municipalities. Denomation d’Origen, the oldest wineyards of the appellation date back to 1145 even if the appellation was only officialy recognized in 1978.
The continental climate of the region is remarkably strong : cold winters and warm summers with long dry periods. With this strong and difficult climate the appellation produces red and rosé wines with an interesting content.
The grape varieties of the appellation are very diverse and varied. The most famous and known is undoubtedly the Grenache which accounts for a bit less than 70% of the wineyards of the appellation (D.O) Campo de Borja. Besides, the Crus of the mono-variety cepages were the ones who contributed to the fame and prestige around the world of the appellation Campo de Borja. The Grenache is clearly the most important grape variety of the appellation with 68%. Of this is created a red wine with a robe of an intens cherry color and a dense and a fleshy but fruity taste. Nevertheless, the apellation also produces red wine with a delicate balance and candour. Besides the rosé wines are quite soft and finally the white wines distinguish themselves by their remarkable lightness and aromatic finesse.
Concerning the other grape varieties : Tempranillo, Mazuela, Merlot and Syrah are used for the red wines. White wines are produced using Macabeu, Chardonnay and Moscatel.
