2014 Château de Montfrin Rouge, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, AOP Costières de Nîmes
The soil of the Costières de Nimes essentially consists of pebbles on clay-limestone soil, signing their membership in the Rhone Valley. Climate-wise, the appellation is subject to strong seasonal rains. As in all the vineyards of the Rhone Valley, the Mistral blows here all year long. An asset for minimal treatments of the vines.
The domein is discrete but produces high quality wines. The domain, property of Jean-René de Fleurieu, is working certified bio-dynamically since 2013. Excluding the culture of the vine, a big part of the area is planted with olive trees for the production of olive oil. Winemaker Benjamin Béguin especially wants to produce red wines which are fresh and give a lot of tasting pleasure, but still with the typicality of the Rhone Valley. The blend of Grenache (fruit), Syrah (power) and Mourvèdre (spices) gives the ingredients for true nectar.
